LowEndLobster's Project PingRay

Precision Bass Meets StingRay Electronics

LowEndLobster's PingRay combines one of the most familiar passive bass pickup designs with the electronics of another classic: a Precision Bass-style split-coil pickup feeding a Boscoe Music MMSR77 vintage StingRay preamp.

The idea is simple: start with the fundamental character and pickup position of a P-style bass, then add the active Bass and Treble controls and electronic response of the classic late-1970s StingRay circuit.

The build goes a step further by adding switchable pickup and capacitor configurations, giving the split-coil pickup considerably more flexibility than a conventional Precision Bass wiring harness.

The Configuration

The PingRay uses a Precision Bass-style split-coil pickup with separate access to the two pickup halves.

A DPDT ON/ON switch provides Series / Parallel switching for the two halves of the split-coil pickup.

Series provides the familiar fuller, higher-output response associated with normal P-style pickup wiring, while Parallel provides a lower-output, more open alternative.

A second DPDT ON/OFF/ON switch adds selectable capacitor voicing using 22nF and 2.2nF capacitors, with the center position removing either capacitor selection from the circuit.

The resulting pickup signal feeds the MMSR77, which provides the vintage StingRay-style active Bass and Treble controls.

This is not intended to turn a Precision Bass pickup into a StingRay humbucker. Instead, it combines characteristics of both instruments to create something different.

For the electronics shown in this build:

• Precision Bass-style split-coil pickup with separate leads available from both pickup halves

• DPDT ON/ON switch

• DPDT ON/OFF/ON switch

• 22nF capacitor

• 2.2nF capacitor

• 9V battery

• normal hookup wire and installation hardware

The MMSR77 Kit supplies the StingRay-style preamp, Volume, Bass, and Treble controls, output jack, battery connection, wiring, and associated installation components.

The body, neck, bridge, tuners, pickup, and other instrument hardware can be chosen to suit the individual build.

Wiring Diagram

The diagram below shows the complete PingRay electronics, including the split-coil pickup, both switches, capacitor options, MMSR77 controls, battery switching, output jack, and bridge ground.

MMSR77 Kit — Classic StingRay 2-Band Preamp

The MMSR77 recreates the classic late-1970s Music Man StingRay 2-band preamp and uses the original LM4250CN opamp. The complete kit includes the preamp and the controls and wiring needed to install it in a bass.
