Thank you for your recent purchase of a Boscoe Music Ray in a Box!
This pedal contains a replica of the vintage preamp used in late 1970s Music Man StingRay basses, assembled into a pedal. Each pedal has been individually tested before shipping and should help recreate the classic StingRay tone in your passive bass.
The original StingRay preamp was created by Leo Fender and Tom Walker, and has a very unusual design. It is designed to be connected directly to the load of a pickup in a series resonant circuit, so you will want to connect your Ray in a Box pedal directly to your bass as any pedals ahead of it will color the tone (typically buy moving the series resonant peak lower and removing some of the brightness).
That said, this pedal will work anywhere on the signal chain and will work well with any bass. However, because Leo Fender designed it in tandem with the StingRay humbucking pickups you won't get the full StingRay sizzle unless you connect it directly to a passive bass with a StingRay-style humbucker wired in parallel.
Some examples of passive StingRay models:

Ernie Ball Music Man Short Scale StingRay
Ernie Ball Music Man Tim Commerford Passive signature

This pedal uses a center-negative 9V power supply (like most other bass pedals) and draws a miniscule amount of power.
